I recently got a Kindle, after thoroughly read-ing up on them and seeing one in 3-d "reality" and so on. I like best being able to order, for free, as many samples of books that are available on Kindle as I want. Its like being in a very big bookstore, and being able to browse as long as I want, for hours if I want, but in my pj's and in my old comfortable chair. I can then, with one click, order said book, or not. I therefore have ordered WAY more books since I bought the Kindle than in a normal month of time, I hope this rate doesn't keep up or I'll be broke. I love this aspect of it.

On the downside---of course, not every book you would like is available on Kindle, though Ammie has a nice little one-click note to the publisher on any book not available: Please make this book available on Kindle!" and I cdo click those very dutifully as I come across them. Most classics, in the public domain, are of course available. Many books are free...which means .99-2.99. There are lists on Amazon which people have put together, by subject matter, but oddly, I can't find a fully updated list by Amazon of all the Kindle-accessable books, and since THIS IS A COMPUTER EFFORT ONE WOULD THINK THAT WOULD BE REALLY EASY FOR THEM TO DO! TO EVEN DOWNLOAD TO US ON KINDLE FOR FREE! Otherwise, you have to get on Ammie and search around, or I do, anyway.

Another problem, for me anyway. The truly awful "book cover" it came with. It looks fine but the way it is meant to hook into the back of the Kindle, practically requires some kind of advanced degree, plus the tiny little digits of a 5 year old---a very very coordinated 5 year p;d!
The entire back FALLS OFF (this is the portion of the back you'd remove to change the battery) and when you try to re-hook the back to the book cover, by the little hooking piece...its a nightmare.

Oh, and btw, there is a little tiny hole, the size of a pin hole, in the back (of course!) under the back cover so you have to remove the book cover and the back, then you find...per the instrucion booklet...a paper clip, and straighten this out, and push it into the pinholde over and over, up to 10 min if you're me...this is when the scereen freezes, which it has done for me twice in the last two days, and three times since I've owned it. THATS a lot of fun. THEN, since the back normally falls off at atouch, this time it took another 5 min to get the thing back on right. And 10 more to get the book cover on right, without the back falling back off...yes, I did seriously think about throwing it out of the window.

Oh, and I have to charge it daily, though the booklet said a charge should be needed once every 2 wks. I don't know if I should contact Ammie about all this, and get another one, but my experiences with contacting Ammie,by phoen, so far, have consisted of speaking to people in India, nothing racist here, but people who do not particulary happen to speak English, though they have all apparently been taught to discuss whatever the next upcoming American holiday is, so we'll thing they're here.

All together I LIKE it, unlike some, I have no problem with the forward or backward buttons, I like that there is a way to "save" your page with a turned down dog-ear, and and simply love most of all, the free sampling. There is some discount on the books, but of course, I can't sell them back or lend them to friends either. Over all....about 70% satisfied.

I was on the fence about a Reader and had made up my mind for a Kindle, Now with all the rumors of a 2.0 in OCT 2008 I am back to square one. But I found your review helpful and one of the few written after the initial release.

I found this insight quite valuable.

I'd toyed with the idea of submitting some work to Kindle because of the hype on Amazon, but knew little about it. No one I know has one, and this is the first independent review I've seen.

Thank you.
